About FNPH

Florida Non-Profit Housing, Inc. is the successor of the American Friends Service Committee’s Florida migrant and seasonal farmworker housing effort. Formed in 1978, FNPH still exists to help rural people get decent housing — and to help other organizations do that work.

Nearly fifty years, in order.

  1. 1978

    Founded

Formed as successor to the American Friends Service Committee's Florida Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Housing effort — to improve farmworker housing statewide through technical assistance and training. Azalea Apartments was built the same year.

  2. Late 1970s–80s

    Florida's first self-help grantees

Florida's first Section 523 self-help housing grantees come out of FNPH's work.

  3. 1980s–2025

    The technical assistance era

USDA TMA contractor for about forty-five years. Technical assistance reached eight states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, helping nonprofits and municipalities build Section 515, 514, and 516 rental housing. Farmworker rental assistance ran throughout.

  4. 2025

    Strategic plan adopted

The 2025–2027 plan writes down the pivot from technical assistance to direct service and development.

  5. 2025

    HUD-approved housing counseling

FNPH becomes the first certified housing counseling agency in its counties.

  6. 2025

The USDA technical assistance contract ends

Forty-five years of regional technical assistance close as the direct-service chapter opens.

  7. 2025

    Azalea Apartments acquired

40 homes in Bowling Green — FNPH's first USDA 515 preservation, with the Housing Assistance Council.

  8. 2026

    First-time homebuyer workshops begin

January in Sebring at Veranda Breeze; April in Avon Park with the housing authority.

  9. 2026

    Applying to run self-help housing

FNPH applies to become a Section 523 self-help grantee itself — the program it taught others to run for forty-five years.

  10. 2028

    Fifty years

    The fiftieth year.
